Zola
The film adaptation of Aziah “Zola” King’s absurdist and bombastic Twitter thread (practically a novella) about the weirdest weekend of her life, inexplicably the toast of Sundance 2020, is basically fine. There are a few amusing sequences and the two leads do a good job of portraying their characters, but this felt like “Spring Breakers” for babies, an eighty minute series of jokes about dumb people in pursuit of avarice, most with the same punchline, as told by the lone sane person in the room, which the original Twitter thread conveyed while taking so much less time from my life.
