The Sparks Brothers

As an advertisement for the titular band, this was pretty alright. As a work of art whose competition consists of every other film ever made, this was awful. Edgar Wright does his damnedest to dress up the story of Sparks, including stop-motion animation and loving celebrity endorsements, but he can’t find an angle besides “they made a great album, everyone was optimistic at first, it sold like shit, they were dispirited, repeat”, which isn’t enough for a two-hour feature. “The Story of Anvil” and “Listening to Kenny G” are far better documentaries about venerated niche acts than this fluff piece.
