Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995 TV series) (Netflix dub watched for review)

When “Evangelion” is clicking on all cylinders, which is blissfully often, it can be easy to see why so many have referred to it as a transcendental work. When the music is going bonkers and the direction works to highlight destructive spectacle and character work simultaneously, there are few anime on its level. It’s frustrating, then, that while much of it is great, there’s also a lot of “monster of the week” stuff that feels like filler, whole plotlines getting dropped like a bad habit, and tonal inconsistencies that don’t feel like purposeful dichotomy. Great work, but there’s better anime.
