Turning Red

The second Pixar film to take inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki’s low-key works—among its working titles was “My Neighbor Toronto”—proves to be better than the first. “Spirited” is the term I keep coming back to, from the enthused vocal performances to Göransson’s incredible score to the imagery that pops off the screen, all working to ensure these one-hundred minutes fly by. It isn’t the deepest film ever and I’m still trying to adjust to period pieces being set in 2002 (“Lady Bird” should’ve prepared me yet I’m still not ready), but I hope more films like this get made.
