Scream 3

The delicate humor-drama balance of “Scream” has drifted from 80-20 to 60-40 to, with the third chapter, 50-50. It isn’t incongruous with what’s happened in the story so far—of course Sidney has PTSD from all the killings—but I can’t shake that the planned version of “3” that was scrapped due to Columbine and heavy executive meddling might have been more engaging. I still laughed out loud a few times (“Vertigo! Hello!”) and plenty of the commentary lands, especially the condemnation of how Hollywood treats women, but this was the weakest of the original trilogy, and it isn’t close.
