Possession (1981 film)

The score below is better indicative of the quality of “Possession” than how easy it is to recommend. The acting is cheesy, suggesting over-the-top comedy, but the story is drenched in allegory and the practical effects are as brilliant as they are haunting and vile, and asking an audience to be on board with all it asks is more than most films would dare. If you’re not scared off by the phrase “arthouse horror”, however, I think you’ll find a lot to love here, though special praise must be given to Adjani’s brilliant and gutsy performance. On par with “Angst”.
