I was not planning on watching this as it looked like a dumb film meant to occupy the attention of children, but then it got nominated for Best Animated Feature so here we are. There’s a late emotional twist that had some heart to it, but this is otherwise about as inessential, forgettable, and devoid of humor as the press material suggests. The creators have made no secret of this being an attempt at capturing Hayao Miyazaki’s magic, and to be kind, it’s about as boring as “Totoro”. Why this was nominated instead of the last “Evangelion” is beyond me.
