Listening to Kenny G
Those who view documentaries as extended advertisements of their subjects (and are inflexible in regarding the form as anything else) likely wouldn’t get past the title of this, my second-favorite documentary of the year. Whether “Listening” is putting forth an argument in favor of G’s music or having folks versed in music break down why his material is objectively terrible, director Penny Lane finds and expresses the wit of the situation, ensuring a level of rapt engagement throughout. This was an effortless watch, one of the freshest documentaries in some time and easily one of the best films of 2021.
