In the Heights (2021 film)

When the year’s biggest acclaimed flop is hitting on all cylinders, it’s easy to stay on its side. It’s not hurting for great numbers that provide meaningful characterization and move the meager plot forward. That said, I’m not sure what changed in the adaptation but this feels cut to the bone despite its considerable runtime, with underdeveloped characters and relationships and a final hour that drags something fierce. I understand and respect that cutting material is common in adaptations, but “Heights” comes to feel at once too long and too short. This’d have a lower score with a lesser soundtrack.
