Identifying Features

This is one of those great films that is hard to recommend to most—“it’s a visually dense tale of a mother coming to terms with possibly never knowing what happened to her son, FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY”. That said, the visual language of “Identifying Features” is breathtaking throughout, finding beauty in the drab for the first two-thirds before, um, switching it up hard for the final third. This is one of those films where the cinematography does as much to inform of a character’s outlook as their faces do, all without resorting to cheap gimmicks. Difficult but enthralling.
