Eighth Grade (2018 film)

A dorky YouTuber that upped his Q rating on the strength of monkeycheese songs grew up and made a heartbreakingly earnest teenage dramedy—that’s a punchline I didn’t see coming. Elsie Fisher is an utter delight as a wallflower trying to break out of her shell, but the real star is Burnham’s commentary via presentation, amping up the music to simulate the lead’s heightened anxiety, self-made motivational YouTube videos serving in place of a diary, and a phone being the new way of passing notes. The kids will be alright; they’ll find a way. I mean, YOU made it, right?
