Eastbound and Down (Season One)
A fine, if problematic, start. We’re not given enough time with our villain protagonist to really get into what he’s like as there is too much plot to get through. Will Ferrell’s character feels like a cameo part that transformed into something unwieldy in the writer’s room, and the season’s excuse for a story arc neither feels complete nor pays off into a proper punchline. This is a breezy view up until then, though, and Danny McBride’s performance is spot-on as the show’s jerkass hero. The show would improve greatly from here, but E&D starts off better than most comedies.
