Community (Season One)

Speaking exclusively of the first season of a comedy that was on the cutting edge of humor two presidents ago, where the finale has a transphobic running gag and a character that engages heavily with metahumor while making pop culture references is treated like some grand revelation instead of old hat, “Community” is fine. It goes on too long for how little meat there is on these bones, but it tries, it isn’t painful to get through, and occasionally, it delivers an outright inspired half hour. An agreeable comedy that’s sometimes as smart as it likes to think it is.
