American Psycho (2000 film) (revisited)

I get it now. This isn’t an underhanded celebration of masculinity but a takedown of toxic masculinity, so tightly wound and razor-sharp, one could forgive the inattentive for missing the telltale signs we shouldn’t take this all so seriously (forgiveness is divine, you are angelic). It might not have a carefully crafted narrative, but there IS a story being told and it’s mostly conveyed through a series of increasingly violent and hysterical murders, with the only things keeping this from being a slasher flick being the framing of it all. Just, well, be wary of dudes with Patrick Bateman posters.
