WinBack (Nintendo 64 version, played on Switch for review)

If the progression of FPS games goes “Catacombs 3-D” to “Wolfenstein” to “Doom”, another through-line can be made for cover-based shooters with “WinBack” to “Kill Switch” to “Gears of War”, if “Catacombs 3-D” sucked. The work put in to make the horrid N64 controller work here is admirable, but it’s up to whoever is sculpting combat scenarios to make the most of these designs and what they come up with switches between putting me to sleep and throwing too much at the player. There’s maybe a dozen N64 games released after mid-1999 worth playing, and “WinBack” isn’t one of them.
