Pachinko (Chapter Two)

Comparatively messier than the premiere, with some of the connections between scenes of distant and recent past representing wild jumps, at least at this juncture. “Pachinko” still packs a punch with the understated but tangible romance serving to contrast with how other relationships depicted have worked out (or not). We’re not shown two impossibly beautiful people being drawn together by their impossible beauty; rather, Sunja’s previously established tendency to look for the best in most, combined with Hansu’s repeatedly reinforced longing for goodness, despite his occupation makes what comes next feel an earned sort of inevitable. Another gorgeous, breathless hour.
