Nightcrawler (2014 film)

I suppose there are some perspectives from which “Nightcrawler” does not work—its damnation of the media’s predatory nature never quite landed for me, and it commits so hard to its central character study that such focus arguably hurts the overall plot, so bereft of beats it can be summed up on a napkin. All the same, Jake Gyllenhaal, a great actor too often stuck holding up bad films, has never been better than as the film’s sociopathic antihero, someone who has already past the point of no return in discarding his humanity before the film’s start. Mesmerizing, haunting, incredible.
