Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984 film; 2005 English Disney dub watched for review)

How do you adapt an epic graphic novel that’s over one thousand pages long into a two-hour film with the added handicap that the comic you’re adapting has only two-hundred-and-fifty pages done? Simple—take a cleaver to it. This version of “Nausicaä” is so butchered that the change of its chief deuteragonist, Kushana, into a proper villain is among its minor issues (the Vai Emperor isn’t mentioned once; imagine cutting Sauron out of “Lord of the Rings”). It bulldozes its way so rapidly through exposition and events that the only thing that sticks is its treehugging message. Read the manga.
