Jushin Liger vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr., from WCW Starrcade 1996
The only singles bout between two of the most famous cruiserweights of all time has achieved something close to cult classic status in the intervening years, helped incalculably by the profiles of the performers and unfazed by that it’s maddeningly boring. There’s a solid story outline here, Liger bullying the smaller Mysterio, but there’s so much downtime between the underwhelming “big” spots that even the announcers, whose job is to make the match seem better than it is, take to indulging Dusty Rhodes’s delirious ramblings. I’ve seen worse, but this remains one of the most disappointing matches I’ve ever seen.
