Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons

"Journey to the West" isn't a retelling of the meat and potatoes of JTTW (this consists of the story before the titular Journey begins), but it aims to capture the spectacle, humor, and drama of the beloved text. Stephen Chow knows his way around the former two elements, and the latter is...well, two out of three ain't half bad. It isn't terribly underwhelming drama, but it doesn't land nearly as well as the fights and jokes do, mostly due to the erratic chemistry of the two leads. It ends with the start of the Journey--almost acceptable sequel bait.
