The best joke of this, possibly the best comedy of the century so far (“Parasite” is its only competition), isn’t the excuses it provides to engage with absurdist, arguably obscene humor or that it forces you to consider “wow, the guy who played Short Round is an amazing actor”. No, the best joke is how it posits itself like so much discarded ad copy, a visually stunning action-adventure dealing with high concepts that is also a deeply personal story, and pulls it all off effortlessly. An instant classic everyone should see, and I’m eager to see what DANIELS do next.
