Emily the Criminal

“Emily the Criminal” isn’t the best film of the past year or so to explore the relationship between debt, crime, and labor forces, but since I can’t convince any of my loved ones to give “7 Prisoners” a chance, this is a fine runner-up. Ford’s eye for framing and ear for tension (seriously, the score is great) elevates a troperrific take on a comic actor doing a dramatic turn as someone who gets involved in nefarious schemes, and while it deflates a bit in its third act, I still came away feeling satisfied. A pleasant surprise, given the uninspired marketing.
